About Us

What is happening in myanmar

With over 1,500 civilians killed and over 10,000 arrested, the situation in Myanmar continues to remain incredibly dangerous and consequential. As an organization, we are heartbroken and seriously worried for our many friends and family in Myanmar. The Urban Village is committed to standing with the many ethnic peoples of Myanmar in their fight for freedom, justice, and democracy.

Our work in Kawthoolei

2021 was a very tough year for the Karen and Karenni community both locally and back in Myanmar. Many of us are all too familiar with the situation in Myanmar and the ethnic cleansing and oppression taking place there. Many of us have immediate family who are currently hiding from the Myanmar Military.

As an organization we have tried our best to support our community by doing fundraisers for the internal displaced people in Myanmar. Then, Jesse and I were lucky enough to be apart of two teams who were able to sneak into Myanmar and distribute these funds to those displaced by the violence.

We stand with our Karen and Karenni communities in Myanmar

With everything that's going on in the world, the coup that happened in Myanmar in February may have been forgotten by some. But for Minnesota's Karen population, the coup and the cascading events that followed are very much top of mind.

In December, host Cathy Wurzer spoke with Minnesotans Jesse Phenow and Ku Hser, just a few days before they left for southeast Asia to help Karen refugees who are dealing with displacement and persecution after the coup that happened in Myanmar in 2021.
